Odometer went "poof' 850 1996

A funny thing happened on the drive across the country...that has me flabergasted.

After driving ~1,000 miles from South Carolina to Colorado in a 1996 850 wagon, the odometer (i.e., # miles driven on car so far...~150,000) stopped working suddenly. The trip meter and the speedometer are working just fine.
If the cable breaks, wont' all of them stop at once?

Any ideas on the problem would be most appreciated.
