1998 tail gate sticking V70-XC70

I have a 1998 V70 XC. The tail gate lock lever just started sticking . If I push in on it and lift the lever at the same time. I here a click and it opens . I can open it.The trouble is that my wife drives the car and she can not get it to open . I took the back panel apart to get to the lock assembly . Every thing looks fine . Any HELP ?
