Clutch Biting Point

2001 Volvo S40 1.9 Diesel with manual gears.

My biting point is usually right at the top of the clutch travel. It doesn't even begin to engage until my foot is nearly off the pedal.

But then, randomly once or twice a day, it'll bite really low down, just as soon as I start lifting my foot, and it'll progressively engage all the way to the top (as it should).

What could cause the biting point to sometimes change like that?
