Correct, each light has a 3 position switch: off, on, automatic when door opens.

The switch for these is in the door latch. Open the driver's door and inspect the latch. On the outside end is a black metal thing(?), push it away from the body of the car and the lights will go out. Pull on the door handle and the black thingy pops back up and lets you close the door. All the doors have this micro switch.

If it only happens infrequently, check the wiring between the door and frame for any wear or chaffing.
