Low Battery Voltage Message - V70 XC - 128K miles V70-XC70

I was driving for about 45 minutes in rain and with the wipers (both front and back) A/C on when I got the "Low Battery Voltage" message. When I got to my destination 5 minutes later I turned the car off for 10 seconds and then started it right up - no warning message. Five hours later I started it up (no problems) and drove for about 10 minutes (on the highway) with the A/C on (no wipers) when the warning message showed again. At that point I turned off the AC and the message cleared about 30 seconds later. I tried the A/C again later and the message returned. I've seen all kinds of messages in here about batteries, alternators, voltage regulators, etc. - but where do I begin? I would normally just take it to the dealer, or get a battery at Sears. I'm sorry, but I don't have a volt meter or any way to diagnose it. Thanks for any guidance you can provide...

Tim
