Tar stuck to the tire? How to get off?

LOL, my daughter just came home and told me that at low speed, parking lot turns, the V70 goes "clunk, clunk" on left hand turns!!!

Because I replaced the struts last fall, I had initially guessed that one of the strut bolts broke or some other disaster is about to let the right front wheel fall off. I took the car to a cul-de-sac 100 ft away, and sure enough, clunk, clunk! Right hand turns were OK but interesting.

I pulled into the garage and lifted the right wheel. As I was going to grab the wheel to pull it off, I noticed the top was full of fine gravel. Hmmmm. Lots of tar. About 18" of tar and gravel imbedded in the length of the tread, with another 1/4 inch hanging over the edge where it was catching on the suspension on the hard left turn.

Then, my wonderful daughter came out to the garage and seeing the damage, commented that the car was vibrating at 70mph on the Interstate while driving home. It was only a 15 minute trip total.

SO, the question is: How do I get this tar off of my tire? I already peeled off the outer edge, about an ounce of weight.
I don't have a tub to put the tire in and the only solvent I have is gasoline. Which I don't really want to waste. Scraping it will only get the tar off the top of the tire, not inside the treads.

Thanks,

Klaus
