Tar stuck to the tire? How to get off?

I'm sure you realize that there are a lot of possible solvents (paint thinner, acetone, charcol lighter fluid etc) that will work, but their cost would be more than gas. All sound some what dangerous in that they are flamable. The only non-flamable might be a brake degresser. I'd just scrap off all you can mechanically and let it go at that. I would think the small amount left in the tread might not throw off the balance too much.
