Funny noise coming from the A/C 850

The A/C on my 97 850R wagon was always kicking on and off every fifteen or so seconds ever since I bought in four years ago with 48K on it. Numerous A/C specialists said it was normal. Well, yesterday, while out driving, I a funny scrapey kind of sound coming from the engine compartment. A friend riding with me said, "Sounds like the A/C pulley or belt." I reached down and turned off the A/C and the sound instantly stopped. I changed out both the timing and accessory belts last year (both OEM). Is there a connection with that A/C switching on and off all the time, and now this beginning sound coming from the A/C compressor. And, is it a pulley or am I looking at a new A/C compressor? Dick
