Shifter problem - trouble with mechanical lock

I started having trouble getting out of and into park on my 1996 855R.

I checked the switch on the brake pedal and the solenoid is working properly.

The problem is in the actual mechanism that controls the lever's movement in its quadrant.

I can see the solenoid operate properly. but the button on the shift lever does not push the rod inside the shift lever down far enough to release the lock.

I can push the metal tab down a bit more than the shift lever button does, and get out of park easily.

To me, it seems like there is a problem with the rod inside the shift lever, but this seems very unlikely.

Anyone have any experience with this problem?
