XC90 bevel gear problems/question for a do-it-yourselfer XC90 2004

I have an XC90 with 65K miles on it. a new angle (bevel) gear was installed last year as a courtesy to the previous (original) owner. Because it was an out-of-warranty courtesy, there is no warranty onn the part. Now, 10K miles later, the gear is leaking fluid and requires a reseal. The deal is estimating 7 hours at $68/hour for this. I am wondering what my options might be. Can I check the gear myslef and add fluid periodically as needed? (If so, how?) Can I replace the seal myself? (again, if so, how?) Should I just let the gear fail and buy a new one that would at least be covered under the one-year Volvo parts warranty?

Or should I sell, as this car is getting expensive (I just installed the third set of rear wheel bearings for this car (I just bought it in March), and now this with the bevel gear--are these things just money pits?)
