P0422 code and transmission? V70-XC70 2000

I have replaced ignition modules, plugs, O2 sensors and even the cat over the last few years. My '00 V70 XC runs great but I still get the P0422 once a week. I clear it and it comes back. No other codes now. Just the P0422.

I did make one interesting observation. If I drive 3rd instead of OD, I never get any codes. Everything is fine.

I can't figure out what the connection is? Somehow the lower gear and/or higher rpm seem to make a difference to the emission computer in that it thinks the cat if performing just fine.

Can anyone speculate on how the gear selection and the P0422 might be related?

Many thanks,

RGW
