Shifter problem - trouble with mechanical lock ---- DOH! I figured it out!

Garth - Thanks for your help.

Since damaging the internal rod seemed unlikely, I tried to figure the problem out.

I have seen several posts about removing the shift lever and saw that it is just pressed on. Guess what - All I had to do was to give it a couple of good whacks on the top to force it down a bit.

Evidently, yearS of pushing on the button on the shift lever caused the lever to come up a bit, making the rod inside the shift lever too short. Then I had problemS getting out and into park!
