Good deductions. The first time my timing belt went, I hadn't a clue what had happened.

Is the front of your engine oily? Ie. Leaking seals. If so, oil softens the belt and causes the teeth to shred off. Replace the seals. (You'll note I said "first time". I didn't learn from the first experience.)
