Your transmission is in "limp home mode", not "W". The speed sensor tells the transmission computer how fast you are going so it can determine which gear it should be in. Try driving in 3 or L (from a stop, then shift to 3).
Is you ABS light on? That also receives the signal from the speed sensor and if the ABS module fails it can be repaired - http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/

Try to clear the fault code with the scanner. If that doesn't work, get out your radio code and take off the negative cable for the battery for about 10 minutes. That should clear the code for a while.
