Computer - fuel gauge discrepancy ... the reason why ... V70-XC70 2001

The current mpg/average mpg are not related to his discrepency with the fuel gauge. His miles to empty indicate that the float sensor in the tank is OK, but his gauge on the dash is in error.
Perhaps a dealer scan tool would help pinpoint the problem, but that could be costly - dealers seldom do things for free.
