Clutch or hydraulics? 850 1997

My guess is the clutch. The slave cylinder runs off of the brake fluid so a problem there will show up as a brake problem as well unless it is badly contaminated. The slave cylinder is positioned so that it would likely eat brake fluid contamination out of the master cylinder.

My clutch chatters when it is cold and it is getting near the far end of the throw when it engages but is doesn't slip when engaged so I ignore it.

The car has 210k on it and I can find no previous service records that says that it has ever been changed. Not a bad life but I see a new clutch in my future - hopefully in the spring since it is getting way to cold around here for driveway work.
