Dumb 850 sedan trunk strut question 850

I'm feeling a little stupid asking questions for a simple fix like the trunk struts. I just ordered two new trunk struts from FCP Groton and promptly proceeded to remove the old ones. My old ones were not easy to pop off the part of the body it connects to but they came off with a little downward pressure. I then go to install the one side and then placed on top of the body point but I couldn't get it to "snap" on. The strut seemed to be seated but it must not have been because I went to test the strut and close the the trunk only to have it come off the point of the body where it connects and then compress against something and then broke the end off.

My question is how hard must the open end of the strut be pushed down on the connection point on the body? Should it make a snap sound to make sure it is on properly? It's very hard to get an angle at the body connection point without bending the strut. Any help is greatly appreciated.
