car radio coded 850 1996

i recently changed my battery and the word code blinked on so i punched the code in, which im certain was rigth bc ive done it b4, but this time it didnt work, instead it turned off , i mean the word off came on, so i tried and tried again to no avail, i called dealer and he said the radio needs 2 b reset by puting key in and turning to 1st notch which is the roman numeral 1, then waiting for 2-3 hours then it shud read code again and punch in my codes.. has anyone ever tried this or know it to b true? i still havent made up my mind about the lucas treatment versus fluid change bc my dad will be home by next september and he says i shud wait and just do the treatment instead of flushing yet im scarred my volvo might not make it till then or at the very least i will b adding more damage to the problem.. r there other sites that i can learn from ? bc i have to make up my mind, i need more detailed advice and info about my tranny and radio amongst other repairs needed for my 1996 850 turbo 2.3 liter needed: competent mechanic in the baltimore, maryland area. help.....
