why is my ignition timing At ~40 BTDC?!?! 850 1996

Pull the spark plug and use a flash light to watch the piston go up and down. I've stuck a rod in my other car so I can turn the crank with a wrench and watch the rod top out.

Perhaps another member might comment on this: I heard that when setting TDC in a Volvo, it's not really TDC so my method is invalid, and that you have to use a tool that catches a notch in the flywheel to really set TDC. Comments?
