seized air con compressor

It seems the air conditioning compressor has frozen on my vehicle. I put a jacket over it, still couldn't get it to work. (insert comedy drum roll thing here)

But seriously, I turn a/c on, it turns car off. I can't justify spending any more money on this vehicle, but I know it's going to get really hot. Plus, all that wind noise is annoying.

New (rebuilt) compressor installed and all is $800. Guy at shop has one sitting in a '98 S70 w/145k and a blown engine that had cold air when the car worked he'd be willing to plop in there for $400 installed. Guy said he'd give me a 90 warranty as well.

Is this a good option? I won't spend $800. Will the $400 deal get me 2 or 3 years?

Also, should I require him to flush the system? I keep reading about particulates in the r134a that may contaminate the newly installed business and so a flush is recommended.

Thank you all.
