Looking at '01 XC70 V70-XC70 2001

I've found an '01 XC70 with 139,000 miles on it. The description says that it "slips in third gear". My research on the car shows that this is a fairly common problem with solutions running from flushing the fluid to replacing the transmission. Does anyone have a feel for the frequency with which the "simple" solutions fix this problem? Also, at 139,000, should I assume that the ETM has been replaced? I think I can get this car for $3500. I do most of my own work (I have 7 RWD Volvos)and don't mind dropping another $2000 into it to make it dependable (hoses, belts, flush fluids, etc.) but I don't want something with a bunch of problems that require the dealer to repair (200 miles away).
