Reliable AWD Volvo ? V70-XC70

My wife wants an AWD car. Right now she has a 93 245. I'm pretty familiar with the 240's but don't know anything about the AWD Volvos. Can anyone shed some light on this? We're interested in learning the good, the bad, and the ugly before jumping in. I'm used to doing all the work on our cars, but I've heard that's not going to be practical or possible if we make the change to AWD. Any and all info would be appreciated.
