Spare Tire Quandrie

When we purchased a used S80, the spare tire, jack, etc. weren't properly stowed. So I did my best to figure out the puzzle (which includes a plastic riser piece that fits in the middle of the rim and supports the truck floor). It seems the best I can come up with is that the spare tire has to lay face down. Is that true? If so, it will be a PITA to check the pressure periodically. I suppose I could get (or fabricate) some sort of valve extension hose that comes up through the rim for pressure maintenance, and then unscrew it when I have to mount the spare. Am I all wet here?
