S60 intermittent no-start S60 2001

My son's '01 S60 is having intermittent no-start situations. The starter will not run. When the problem occurs, it doesn't sound like the solenoid is engaging (moving the starter gear into position). The battery is fairly new and starts fine other times, doesn't seem to be temperature dependent, cables are clean, no errors on the display. Any suggestions as to what else to check?
