Check engine light S40-V40

My 2004 S 40 1.9 L Turbo had a few weeks ago the acheck engine light coming on.
Code was for something related to the Cooling Temperature at Thermostat not beeing correct. Mechanic changed Thermostat and Temperature Sensor. 120 miles later the light came on again. From what I read it seems to be a problem with S 40... But I also have a 2000 S40 with 66K miles and had no problem with it so far. This one has 76K miles.
Any ideas of what could be triggering the check engine light?
I also heard something about an ECM software upgrade that needs to be done by dealer...
Tks for yr input.
