Volvo says I need a new ECM 850 1996

Since summer of last year, my '96 850 wagon (300K miles, manual transmission) has had trouble with stalling when the engine was not warmed up. Once the temp gauge started creeping up as the car idled for about 5 minutes, the car would drive fine. We took the old brick to Volvo, who's had the car now for over three weeks. First, they installed a new mass air flow sensor, which didn't do the trick (~$500). Now, they're telling us it needs a new ECM ($1,500). The dealer had quite a bit of technician turnover lately, and I was informed that a new technician was being certified while they had our car. The question I have: assuming the car needs a new ECM, is $1,500 a reasonable repair cost? Also, wouldn't I get some type of diagnistic code that would tell me I needed a new ECM? I have an OBD II code reader that I can use to re-check any codes.
