Barometric Sensor V70-XC70 1998

I have a V70 T5. Few days ago my CHECK ENGINE light came up so I took my car to the shop. They tested it with the scanner and said that the Barometric Sonsor has failed and costs about$300 to replace. They replaced this about 2-3 years ago. I understand that this sensor is useful where you drive in high altitude. I live in Michigan so there is no high altitude. My question is that is it ok and possible to disconnect this so CHECK ENGINE does not come up again.
Thanks.
