let it idle rough for 4-5 min for fault code 850 1996

If your Check Engine light isn't on yet, let it idle for about 4-5 minutes. Some of the fault codes (like "short term fuel mixture too weak/lean") won't register until the problem is constant for a certain time (I think 3 minutes). A bad air mass meter would probably register a Check Engine code of some variety.

Old school says unplug the AMM and if car runs better (or less crappy), look further at the AMM.
