Re-installing front calipers,specically retaining clips for outer pad V70-XC70

Trying to re-install front caliper and don't remeber hos the retainginclip was installed positioned for the outer pads. The manual I have has terrible pictures/explainations. does the center of the clip go over the metal backing on the the pad? Just sitting on the bench the clip rests on the body of the caliper. When I install the caliper on the mounting bracket it pushs the clip off.

After remaking front brake lines this seems a stupid stumbling block!!!!!!!!!
