You don't have to remove the entire dash to take out the instrument cluster:

Try to park your car in the sun this time of year. A warm dash makes it easier to bend. If you have a turbo, disconnect the vacuum line close to the hood release handle. If you have a trip computer, there is an additional plug for it near the rear of the cluster.
Order both odo gears and replace both of them at the same time.

As to buying an 01 V70 GLT, why not? The light pressure turbo will give you about 200bhp and the mpg is still pretty good.
