AIrbag Inspection? V70-XC70 1998

Hello fellows,

I recently noticed that there is a sticker on the B pillar on my car (the part that is normally covered by the back edge of the driver's door and the front edge of the rear driver's side door) that says my airbag needs to be inspected, I believe listing JAN 2009 as the date it's next due for an inspection.

Questions:
- is this inspection necessary?
- what are the consequences of not having the inspection done?
- has anyone out there listening ever had one of these inspections done before?
- is this a Volvo only thing or do other makes specify similar inspection intervals?
- what can they really be inspecting without setting them off?
- who can perform this inspection?
- what is the cost?
