Windshield washer pump failure, grinding noise 850 1996

Windshield washer pump quit on my 96 turbo wagon. Finally traced it down to a leaky hose somewhere under the car, but when I started the car it sounded like throwing a piece of scrap metal into the fan. Killed the engine, started it, quick sound of same and then normal. Stopped the engine, but some pump, solenoid, relay, whatever gremlin was still running. Pulled the key and it stopped. Started the engine again, same metal grinding sound, stopped the engine, pulled the key but the humming relay did not stop. Started it again, metal grinding noise (very scary), killed engine, relay or whatever still running, pulled the key and it stopped. Waited for quite a while and then started the car. It ran okay with no noise so I left it on to warm up while I hunted down the leaking washer hose. Black hoses, black plastic, black engine department. Couldn't find it right off.

Can somebody tell me what the connection is between the leaking washer pump hose that broke somewhere under the car and what relay/starter/solenoid/etc., that is shorting and causing the metal grinding noise someplace some of the time? Do not want to drive this car or experiment any more starting it until I know what is happening and what damage I may have caused. Some help, please! Lloyd
