1998 is the first year that the passenger door cannot be locked/unlocked with a key. Perhaps it is just the handle that is different from the 850s, that I do not know.

So, back to the confusing part. Using the remote will not unlock the pass door, but you are then able to open it from the outside door handle? The inside door handle just doesn't work, period.
There is a rod from the inside door handle to the mechanism which might have come loose or bent.
