I would lie to hear from any Brickboarders who have had issues with their transmissions which required replacement.
Specifically, I am talking abou the fairly common instance when the transmission cooler in the radiator leaks and corrupts the transmission fluid and destroys the transmission.
I have recently had this happen to me on my 2001 C70 with 88,000 miles. The car has had all of the regular interval services but recently developed a lurching when the car slows down and downshifts and a hesitation when drive is engaged.
My transmission specialist performed 3 gly-tek tests and detected traces of coolant in the transmission fluid. He indicated that hsi is destroying the transmission and the internal clutches have already started to delaminate, which will ultimately result in total transmission failure.
The real cause of this major expensive repair is the radiator with the leaking transmission cooler. Interestingly, this will also need to be replaced but the replacement radiator has been redesigned by Volvo due to their earlier design problem/defect.
Who else has had this problem and what did you do about it? Has anyone attempted to deal with Volvo regarding this outside of warranty?
My independent Volvo mechanic told me that he HAD a 2001 V70 that had the transmission replace 4 times. The first time was at 38,000 miles under warranty and once more before the warranty expired. The next two times were covered by his extended warranty.
I know that many Volvo owners were rightly concerned about the ETM problem that has occurred in many models over the years. As a result, Volvo "agreed" to cover this matter under a special warrantly for up to 10 years or 200,000 miles.
Although the ETM replacment could result in a significant repair bill of $1,000+, that is a small amount compared to the repair bill that I am looking at.
