noise "klonk klonk" in 1 + 2 gear when cold 850 1995

Hello, let's see if you take me more seriously than my mechanic.

Problem is: About four weeks ago, my second hand Volvo 850 (bought 3 months ago, built 1995, 130.000 km) started to make a strange sound in the morning on my way to work. It is a kind of double-click ("klonk klonk") which appears when I give gas in the 1 and 2 gear. It seems to stem from the front area around/below the feet. It gets worse the lower the temperature is, but effectively disappears after about 10 minutes driving. Otherwise the car drives wonderfully.

My mechanic suggested on the phone that it might be the ABS check system that I hear. However, I wondered why I hadn't heard the sound the first couple of months. I then brought the car to his garage (driving 200 km!), and he found nothing. "Like going to the dentist", he said. Well, the toothache is back, and I don't have clue what it might be.

I'd very much appreciate any tip before I bring the car to my local Volvo dealer and pay his x-mas presents also.

thanks,

Peter
