XC70 AWD differences/improvements over the years? V70-XC70

Can anyone summarize the changes in the AWD system used in the XC70 over the years? I have scanned the forum and have done a bit of web research so I know the early system (circa 1998) was prone to early wear if run with uneven tire diameters. But why was the system so sensitive? I think Volvo got most of the bugs out of the AWD (and the car in general)by 2004, perhaps even earlier, say 2002. What about traction control and stability control changes? Just looking to understand.

Bill
