Rear bearings 850 1996

Some time this summer, I'll need to replace rear brake discs and pads. Our car has 160,000+ miles on it, purchased used at about 120,000 if I recall correctly; we've never serviced the rear wheel hubs, and have no idea if anyone else did before we bought it.

Is this a part that you service when it makes noise and not until then; and would I have time to get the parts and schedule my time for the maintenance, or is it a sudden death kind of thing?

The parts aren't cheap - replacing both hubs would about triple my parts costs for the disc/pad replacement.
