Axle installation help - DRIVER'S SIDE V70-XC70 2000

Car: 2000 V70XC

Problem:

I just got a replacement axle for the driver's side of my car. I have the old axle removed and am starting to install the new axle. I've got the axle installed just to where the flange for the transmission seal is. I cannot get the flange to enter the seal, I'd estimate that I have about another 1/2" to push the axle in to get it fully seated into the transmission.

For the life of me I cannot get the axle in...or back out (I got the old one out by using a short pry bar, but I cannot get the new axle back out either). I suppose that lock clip near the end of the axle is engaged in the transmission.

Does anyone have a suggestion on getting the axle to fully engage into the transmission? I leaning towards a 3" diameter thick-walled plastic conduit and place it over the end of the axle and beat on it with a BFH...but I'm afraid that it will damage the bearings in the slide joint.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated...I need it!
