Opinion on best year XC70 or AWD V70-XC70

Hello,

After many good years and miles with a 1998 V70 my wife and I have decided to buy a more recent year Volvo. We're zeroing in on 2003/2004 XC70 or V70 AWD models. They seem to be the best balance of lower miles and low price and great for ski country here in New England. Seems that 10 to 12K gets a pretty decent looking car.

Would anyone care to offer some advice on maintenance and reliability of these years? A local mechanic says stay away from 01/02 years. Too many computer and "software" issues. Are the 03/04 years any better? Are there other "weak spots" I should be looking for on these XCs or AWDs

Any info greatly appreciated.
