Re: FIX OR SELL AS IS? 850 1993

Dan: the FAIR thing to do, IMHO, is for you to go to 'kellyblueblook', and/or 'edmunds', and get a $$ figure on what a car, equipped like yours, is worth. Then, get an estimate (labor plus materials) for fixing your problems, and subtract the fix-up price from the estimated value/sales price, and make full disclosure to ANYONE who buys the car, selling it 'as is.' Your alternative, and the only right one, is to pay to have the car fixed pre-sale, and ask full price. Why? Because of the Golden Rule: "do unto others..." Think about it: how would YOU feel if you were an uninformed, non-DIY person, and 'got stuck' with a car like yours (=unfixed), and you wind up on the BrickBoard---if you're lucky enough to find it---bitching and moaning about the /%!!X\/!!# previous owner, and badmouthing Volvos, et cetera, ad infinitum, ad nauseam. When I bought my 3rd hand wagon a few years, I found the sellers to be VERY open about the shortcomings of their cars-for-sale, information which I did NOT have to pry out of them. Sure, in 'the marketplace', it is 'caveat emptor', but think about this: you can feel better about the transaction if it's a 'clean deal', or you can keep your mouth shut, sell your 'dog' to some unsuspecting soul, and probably not sleep quite as well at night as you might be doing with either the fix-up full-price sale, or the discounted as-is full disclosure sale. It's your choice. Me? I wouldn't want to buy a car from you (remember Nixon: "Would you buy a used car from this man?" and "I am not a crook?"). Life has a way of bringing back to you what you dish out. I am sure that you know the difference between right and wrong: do the right thing; it's a great lifelong habit that you can live with. My $.02.--PD
