Auto. Trans. - PNP switch cleaning? 850 1995

Many 850 owners seem to get trouble codes and auto. trans. misbehavior from the "PNP" switch. My experience so far (like others' too) is that the switch acts up when the weather is very cold, but seems to recover on warmer days, or as the engine/trans warm up, or on restarting. This suggests the switch may not really be bad but just dirty or iced up. Has anyone tried to clean the switch (with ignition wire dryer, electrical contact cleaner, or the like) rather than replacing it? Is there a reason not to try this first?

Many thanks to anyone who replies!
