Considering buying XC; looking for experience V70-XC70 2002

I am considering buying a Volvo XC (my wife wants a station wagon). I personally am leaning towards an SUV -- either a Lexus RX 300 or a BMW X5. I am looking for your experience with Volvo. I am told that Volvo is a high maintenance car (so is BMW) but this is n-th hand information. My criterion for buying the car is safety, reliability, and comfort. I think Volvo satisfies me on safety and comfort and I am looking for your opinion on reliability.

I will hate to be at dealership every month to fix something, and will feel miserable if my wife has to call me from somewhere because the car broke down. She currently drives a Honda Accord station wagon and I have been happy with it in the last ten years (with 108K miles). I diligently take my car to dealer for oil change and all scheduled maintenance.

I may add that I also have a Saturn coupe and that one -- though not a lemon -- has required more maintenance compared to my Honda.

I'll look for your opinions on late model XCs.
