clutch noise 850 '95

Hi again,

I have a 5spd and for a while now when I first take off, especially first thing in the morning, my clutch makes this groaning noise kind of like old rusty metal machinery, it works fine but makes this noise not all the time though, naturally. Also, sometimes when putting the car in 1st something clunks or shifts, could this be the trans? Also, when taking off (I noticed this first when at a drive through because of the sound bouncing off the wall) I hear this noise that sounds like gears clicking as they are meshing together, hard to explain in writing. We use synthetic gear oil and have changed it, doesn't seem to affect the noise. Everything works but I am worried this may turn into a big costly problem. We bought the car with 95,000 miles and have put approx. 30,000 on it, I do not know if anything has ever been to the clutch and having driven only VW's have no clue about hydraulic clutches.

Thanks for any help.

Shelly
