Mike, my experience is the same as Joe's. The sensor is mounted in the driver's side grille UNDER the bumper. When it pops out of its socket (happened to me twice since 1999) it usually rests against the radiator and so the temperature you are seeing is that of the air right next to your radiator. It is usually much higher than ambient.
