Tire Pressure and Fuel Econ 850 1996

Here's a question for the group. Yes, I did do an archive query and mostly tire pressure posts were in regard to ride feel.

The listed max on my Pilot Sports is 51 psi. I was running them at about 45 psi and after 20K the wear seemed ok. However, I took them into Goodyear last week for a balance and they guy lowered the pressure to Volvo specs and said my mileage, ride, wear and performance would be better at a lower pressure. Sure the ride "feel" is softer, though I don't feel the road as well, however, was he right about the rest?

Thanks
