140k S70 GLT S70 1998

My 98 GLT has 140k miles. The dealer where I take it for service says it needs 5k worth of repair so I got a second opinion from an independent shop. This volvo shop was referred to my by a friend and the shop owner laughed when I told him what the dealer said. His price was a fraction of the dealer's price with the same parts and warranty.

My question is should I invest money into this car or just get another car. I tried over the weekend to trade it in and only got 8k for it at best. The shop owner said he would write me a check for 10k today if I just wanted to get rid of it.

Advice please since this is my first volvo.
