Okay, abs control unit report:

The replelacement took all of 30 minutes, tops. It requires the removal / replacement of 4 long, small bolts (i used a 4mm socket wrench) and i also disconnected the battery leads to be sure. I returned the old ABS CU to the dealer as there was a $50 core charge. Total net cost: $369. Seems to work fine, no codes (yet!) and that was it. Thank you to everyone who dropped me a line.
