Worn out clutch 850 1994

I own a 1994 850 (NA) with 107K miles. I bought the car used, and discovered that the previous owner did absolutly no maintence (I took out the factory plugs at 100K!), and I've been doing little things with the help of a Haynes Manual. Anyway, next on the list is the clutch. I took the car to a mechanic, who said the the plate needs to be replaced. I agree, since the clutch slips so much the I can barely go up a hill in 2nd, but can't aford the $1000 they want. My backyard pit crew encourages me to do it myself. Can anyone give me more advice? How hard will the work be? Do I need special tools? Are there any good tricks, or is the job fairly straightforward?
