Paul: it's part of the PCV system, designed to prevent 'detonation' in your system, part of the exhaust gas system. They are a "check regularly" (every 2nd or 3rd oil change?) item. They can get clogged and cause internal pressure, which blows out expensive front and/or rear main seals. They are harder to get to on the 850 than on non-transverse engines; some folks have been hit with multi-hundred dollar bills for checking it, as the manifold cover had to come out, which meant a new gasket, several hours of labor, etc. Many here swear by 100% synthetic oil, because, among other things, of its flow characteristics, etc., etc. You will UNDOUBTEDLY get lots of responses to this posting, and I am sure that you will hear more about 'synth VS. dino'. The flame is a do-not-neglect item. What you might want to do is to find out where it is, if you can watch while the car is being serviced (some indie mechanics let ya watch, don't think the dealers cotton to that idea too much).
