Washing engine, "CHECK ENGINE" light came on. Learn from me. V70-XC70 1998

Greetings,

Whenever I discover something about my V70, I like to post it so you guys can keep it in the backs of your minds. Even if it is inexcusably stupid.

I was washing my engine while it was running, and while avoiding heavy spray on electrical & distributor areas. I rinsed it off & let it run for another 3-5 minutes to make sure everyplace critical dried out. This is a proven method for me for previous cars; works like a top.

However, after finishing the car, it wouldn't start. Hmmm, even as careful as I was, there must be some H2O somewhere around the distributor. I opened the hood & let it dry for awhile. Finally got it started, but ran rough, wouldn't stay running while in gear, exhaust smelled strongly of sulphur. Sputtered a couple of times, and even after intensive prayer that freaking "CHECK ENGINE" light came on.

Long story short: After letting it dry longer it finally started & ran okay. After 4 or 5 trips yesterday, the light finally went off. Cool. $100 savings. A friend told me that that is a function of On Board Diagnostics II (which sucks); after several starts & everything looking okay, it'll clear itself out. I didn't think Volvo would subscribe to this; I thought they locked the codes in & they stayed there. Job security for the mechanics, if you will. Any thoughts on this subject other than "Hey Jim, don't wash your engine like that again."?
